Brewer Position

Whistle Buoy Brewing is looking for a personable, independent and organized individual to join our brewing team.

We are a small independent craft brewery in the heart of downtown Victoria, BC. We operate a 8.5HL Specific Mechanical system with 7 fermenters and 4 bright tanks. We offer a constantly changing beer list with plenty of creativity and innovation. We place a strong focus on using high quality, fresh, local ingredients to make great beer.

We strive to create and provide a fun and inspiring work environment. As a brewer, you will work alongside our Head Brewer to assist in all aspects of running the brewery from recipe development to wort production to cellaring, along with draught maintenance and canning. This is a full-time position ranging from 35-45 hours a week depending on the time of year.

 Duties include:

  • Maintaining all quality standards set for all aspects of the brewery
  • CIP, sanitation and preventative maintenance for all aspects of the brewery
  • Wort production from mill to fermenter
  • Yeast management including cell counts, viability assessments, harvesting and pitching
  • Contribute to recipe and beer program development 
  • Cellaring including transfers and preparing beer for package
  • Carrying out dry hopping, tank additions and fruit processing 
  • Assist in set up and operation of mobile canning equipment
  • Cleaning and filling kegs
  • Assist in maintaining draft lines and taproom beer stock
  • Troubleshooting any equipment and beer quality issues
  • Work beer events as an outward facing member of our team 
  • Follow standard operating procedures to safely handle all chemicals and hoses/vessels under pressure, while wearing PPE

Qualifications and Required Skills:

  • 1-2 years professional brewing and/or cellar experience is required 
  • A certificate from an accredited brewing instructional institution and/or educational background in a science related field is preferred
  • Ability to multitask and adjust to changing priorities
  • Organized, reliable and self-motivated, with the ability to work alone for long periods of time
  • Maintain a tidy and safe working environment
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Experience with material handling equipment
  • Attention to detail
  • Open availability including nights, weekends, and holidays 
  • Maintaining accurate notes and records

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 50lbs to shoulder height and push/pull 160lbs
  • Must be able to work on your feet for up to 10 hours
  • Continual moving, lifting, and manipulation of hoses, pumps, and other parts that require extended standing, lifting, crouching, and walking throughout a shift in a safe and tidy way
